Sleep apnea – causes and treatments

sleep apnea is a serious problem and very common. This is a disorder that interrupts breathing and causes it to start again suddenly. According to data of the Ministry of Health, 50% of the population complains of sleeping poorly, being that 33% has apnea. The big problem is that many of the people do not know they have the disorder.

There are two types of sleep apnea. The most common is called “obstructive”, and occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relaxing while the person sleeps. Consequently, the airways constrict, making the breathing more proper to sleep. The blood then passes to receive a lower amount of oxygen.

sleep Apnea

The brain, to realize that something is wrong, it causes the person to wake up to reopen their nasal passages. Those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea goes through this situation several times during a night’s sleep. Doctors claim that this process can occur between 5 to 30 times per hour, which will bring serious complications to health.

those Who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea also produces snore or a sound as if he were suffocating. Because of this irregularity, sleep will never come to the deepest levels considered healthy. That is why those who suffer from apnea feel sleepy during the day.

The other type of apnea, more rare, is the “central”. Happens when the brain fails to transmit a message to the muscles responsible for breathing. The person then has difficulty breathing, staying asleep or simply sleeping. In the same way that obstructive sleep, apnea central makes the person feel sleepy throughout the day. Your health is completely compromised.

Causes of sleep Apnea

obstructive sleep apnea happens when there are problems in the respiratory muscles. Among the common causes are obesity, the size of the circumference of the neck and the anatomy of the tonsils.

as for the apnea, central can occur due to a heart failure (most common) or a cerebral vascular accident, STROKE (more rare).

Symptoms of sleep Apnea

Among the most common symptoms for both apneas are:
• Loud snoring;
• Wake up in the middle of the night with shortness of breath;
• Insomnia;
• Attention deficit;
• Wake up with a sore throat or dry mouth;
• Headache insistent;
• Forgetfulness;
• Irritation, nervousness and impatience arising from a bad night’s sleep;
• Headache in the morning.

Treatments of sleep Apnea

The goal of treatment for apnea is to keep the airway open so that there is no obstruction of the oxygen and the breathing is not interrupted while the patient sleeps. The most common treatment is through a facial mask is tight fitting and is attached to a machine, in a process called CPAP. This treatment involves inhalation through a mask to continuous pressure in the airways.

Some people can make use of, to sleep, appliances in the mouth. They keep the jaw positioned in a way to allow for good breathing during sleep. In other cases it may be considered a surgery on the nose or in the bone cavity. The removal of tonsils and adenoides can be a solution for children, but does not always have satisfactory effects in adults.
