Now begins the cold weather it is very easy to catch a cold or common cold, and if, as in my case, you are not so keen on taking medications, there are a few home remedies very effective for fighting colds.

How to relieve symptoms of a cold without using medications?

There are many home remedies that will help us mitigate the effects of the cold. Our mothers and grandmothers are a expert in wisdom and popular and small, we recover quickly with their ointments. I until the day of today I’m still applying the remedies of my mother and also accompany other recipes from a book natural remedies that form part of our library: “La botica de la Abuela”, do not know if you have seen any chapter of the program that had the same name, where he saw a man in shirt and tie making multiple gloop for all kinds of problems…

so here’s some home remedies that we proposed in your recipe book:

1.- Syrup of onion and lemon

Ingredients

    the

  • 1 large onion
  • the

  • 6 tablespoons brown sugar
  • the

  • 2 lemons

Preparation: finely Chop the onion and place it in a container. Add the brown sugar, covering the onion and let the mixture marinate for 8 hours. then, strain the preparation. Pour the juice of the two lemons and stir. Save the syrup in a glass jar.

How to take it: Take one tablespoon of syrup every 2 hours

*Version of the recipe for Diabetics:

There is another version of the syrup for people who can’t, or don’t want to, take sugar. I made this version because since a while I try not to consume sugar.

Preparation: Chop an onion into strips, put into water, and let stand for half an hour. Strain the liquid and sip small amounts every 15 or 30 minutes. The result is water that tastes like onion very strong. It is not the most enjoyable, but it can bear.

2.- Breathing Garlic

The medicinal action of garlic not only reduces the cardiovascular and digestive; respiratory system also benefits from its properties. Thanks to its effect expectorant, relieves cough and facilitates the expulsion of mucus. Eating it raw is the best way to take advantage of their properties (I eat it with bread and olive oil at breakfast)

According to the book “La Botica de la Abuela”, when the cold involves a runny nose continuous, it is recommended to breathe in the aroma of the garlic. Surely it is not a smell that is pleasing to many, but it is true that helps to decongest the airways.

Preparation: Mash a clove of garlic on a piece of gauze. Fold the gauze in four and apply it directly to the nose. Perform deep breathing for 10 minutes.

3.- Infusion of thyme, lemon and honey

thyme or chascudo is a wild bush that, in addition to being a good stimulant for the circulation and digestion, is used as an antiseptic and expectorant. An infusion of thyme, lemon and honey can relieve the irritation and mild discomfort of the throat.

Ingredients

    the

  • 1 tablespoon thyme
  • the

  • 1 tablespoon rosemary honey
  • the

  • 1/2 cup water
  • the

  • juice of 1/2 lemon

Preparation: Blanch the thyme (into boiling water). Let sit for 10 minutes and strain. Add the lemon juice and the rosemary honey. Take very warm.
