Sarcoton is indicated as an aid in the treatment of chronic alcoholism. It is not a cure for alcoholism; it simply provides for the individual support to your sincere desire to stop drinking.

How it works?

disulfiram, by itself, is a substance relatively non-toxic. However, it changes sharply, the intermediate metabolism of alcohol and causes an increase in the blood concentration of acetaldehyde in up to 5 to 10 times the level achieved when ethanol is given to an individual who has not received prior treatment with disulfiram.

A single dose of disulfiram will begin to produce effect on the metabolism of ethanol within 1 to 2 hours.

The reaction disulfiram-alcohol can occur up to 14 days after the last dose of disulfiram.


How to use?

to Administer on the first day of treatment, 2 (two) spoons-measure shallow – approximately 1 g of the powder – one(1) time a day.

In the following days, administer one (1) scoop-measure shallow – approximately 500 mg of the powder – one(1) time a day, for weeks or months, until the patient lose completely the desire of drinking alcoholic beverages, or at the physician’s discretion.

The dosage should not exceed 500 mg of disulfiram daily.

Tell your doctor if you feel eye pain or change in vision, numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in hands or feet.


When should I not use?

Sarcoton is contraindicated to patients sensitive to disulfiram or other tiuranos (as contained in rubber, pesticides and fungicides).

Sarcoton in pregnancy and breast feeding: tell your doctor the occurrence of pregnancy during treatment or after its termination.

Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding.

Some cases of birth defects have been reported in children of mothers who received disulfiram during pregnancy. Studies have reported embriotoxicidade of disulfiram in animals. With this, the safety of drug use during pregnancy has not yet been determined and therefore, the therapy with disulfiram in pregnant women, should be evaluated by the doctor regarding the risk-benefit ratio.

The ingestion of alcohol by individuals previously treated with Sarcoton, gives rise to the signs and symptoms of acute, known as reaction disulfiram-alcohol, characterized by: feeling face, hot, redness in face, headache intense, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, sweating, thirst, weakness, vertigo, blurred vision. The facial flushing is replaced by pallor, followed by a drop in blood pressure.

The reaction disulfiram-alcohol can occur up to 14 days after the administration of Sarcoton if the intake of alcohol or products that contain alcohol.

The serum concentration of cholesterol may increase with dose of 500 mg of disulfiram a day.

The urinary concentration of the acid vanililmandélico (VMA) may decrease during therapy with disulfiram.
