“patients problematic” that react to the dosing schedule with therapeutic effect is insufficient, or with a high incidence of side effects, one must apply a dosage in the individual, determined in accordance with the respective serum levels of theophylline.

Side Effects

What are the evils that can cause me?

In general, the Eufilin AP is good tolerability. Oral administration at high doses for prolonged periods of time can cause gastrointestinal disorders.

In cases of high individual sensitivity, may occur to-effects on the part of the instrument to the gastrointestinal (nausea, vomiting, gastralgia, hematêmese, diarrhea, reactivation of peptic ulcer), phenomena cardiovascular (palpitations, tachycardia, extrasístoles, chest pain, arrhythmia, hypotension, facial flushing) or on the part of the CNS (restlessness, insomnia, excitation, spasms, dizziness, headache, tachypnea), as well as tremors, hives and skin rashes.

These side effects may occur due to a relative overdose (a reaction more strong in relation to the active substance) or overdose absolute (plasma concentration of theophylline above 20 mg/l). If there are plasma levels of theophylline above 20 mg/l, can occur toxic side effects, such as seizures, ventricular arrhythmias and gastrointestinal disorders serious.

Warnings and Precautions

what should I know before using?

we Recommend special care in patients with hiperfunção tireoídea (hyperthyroidism), seizures, active peptic ulcer, hepatic or renal severe after myocardial infarction recent, severe hypertension, as well as carriers of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy obstructive or arrhythmia taquicárdica. As a precautionary measure, use of the preparation during pregnancy only under express medical indication and to render strict obedience to medical instructions regarding the medication. During the breastfeeding period, the therapy should occur only after medical evaluation.

Overdose

what to do if someone use a larger amount than is recommended?

In the poisoning, can occur vomiting continuous, agitation, convulsions, and occasional arrhythmias. in cases of poisoning severe (usually with serum levels above 40 mg theophylline/liter of serum), one can install a coma.

In an overdose, the following should be considered: repeated administration of activated charcoal; control of the vital functions, stabilization of blood pressure and hydration appropriate to the patient; oxygen (possibly intubation); diazepam i. v. or i. m.; do not use barbiturates. theophylline is generally metabolized by the patient quickly. when the serum levels are above 50 mg of theophylline per liter of serum, there is the suspicion of a metabolism insufficient of theophylline.
